What Breed is the dog?
And just HOW does the dog try and `protect` you?
Does it bark or run around your boyfriend or does it try and bite him. Jump up at him?
Often when there is a bit of `horseplay` between two humans a dog will try and join in by getting excited and jumping up and barking, but without knowing just how your dog behaves in the situation and how YOU react to it all, its impossible to give you any positive advice.
I can recall some years ago one of my GSD`s would jump up and whine and try and push me and my b/f apart when we cuddled. It was just the dog wanting to join in and was demanding our attention.
Most dogs, if they have a brain, can easily distinguish a real threat from a playful gesture.
However, some dogs that think they are the `boss` will have a possessive attitude towards an owner and resent anyone else touching them.
Then its up to the dogs owner to discipline the dog who really has no right to dictate to its owner who and what they allow a person accepted by them to do.
