I agree; of the two breeds the basset hound HANDS DOWN. Toy breeds can be easily dropped and hurt or squeezed too hard. Yorkies can be prone to nip, out of a defensive nature. A calm, slower moving breed is much better for kids, but in doing rescue we NEVER advocated for anyone to get a dog who had any child UNDER age 6.
Before age 6, kids NO NOT understand “cause & effect” – that you should not kick, chase, harass, climb on, pull the ears or tail of a dog or tease a dog (with food or a toy). or it can LEAD to being bitten, regardless of breed.
